It’s happening! After ordering a Model Y last year in November, we finally got our VIN, and we are taking delivery on Tuesday 6/21. Allyson has waited a long time for her electric SUV, and thanks to Elon and the team for creating this car.

In 1997, I met my wife while working for the US Army at Fort Monmouth, NJ. I was entering my third year with the Army, after just having wrapped up my Masters of Software Engineering. I was the TA for the incoming class of software engineers when my wife joined the program.

She was also a snowboard instructor and drove a green 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport 5-speed. Every weekend, we would drive up to her grandmother’s house in Succasunna, NJ, then go to Shawnee Mountain in PA where Allyson taught ski wee (little kids). I would get free lift tickets and teach myself snowboarding. When I got tired, I went to the ski wee hut, sat with the kids, and had unlimited free hot chocolate.

One time we drove the Jeep up to the University of Vermont so Allyson can show me her college, and go snowboarding at the mountains nearby. The temperature was easily in the negatives. And the heat broke in the Jeep. I had to put on snowboarding boots in the car to keep my toes warm. At the end of a day of snowboarding, it was so cold that the battery terminals shrank, and we had to call AAA to open the frozen hood to jumpstart the car.

When we got back to NJ, she sold the car to her dad and bought a used 1996 Toyota 4Runner. We kept that car for about 18 years.

After we had kids, we got a Honda Odyssey, then a Nissan Leaf, a Tesla Model S, a Fiat 500 Abarth, and in 2018, a new Tesla Model 3 for her. We were originally eyeing the Model X, but due to timing and cost reasons, we ended up with the bookend S and 3 instead.

The Model Y was unveiled on March 14, 2019. Because we had enough Tesla referrals, we got an invite to go to the reveal event in Hawthorne, CA. Since I was lucky enough to go to both the P85D and Model X reveals, I volunteered to stay home with the kids so Allyson can go as my guest. My invite was unfortunately non-transferrable.
