There are a lot of great engineers at Google, and I see paths to get to L6 without having to deal with politics.

Look at the senior and staff engineers on your team, and decide which one you most want to emulate. See if they are willing to meet with you regularly and be your mentor. It really helps to have them “sponsor” you when the time comes for a promo, as their voice carries a lot of weight.
