Bucking the US College System

Our son Jack is graduating high school this summer. He’s a smart kid. He got a 1430 on the SATs, putting him in the top 97th percentile, but due to Covid interruptions, he doesn’t have top grades and few extra curriculars. He does have a proven knack for technology, and coming from dad, who is a 13 year Google veteran, that’s high endorsement.

What if I told you that for college, he will have the opportunity to:

  • Study Computer Science, which is what he wanted
  • Get a full tuition scholarship with a $500 monthly stipend
  • Live abroad and immerse into a new culture
  • Learn to speak, read, and write Mandarin fluently
  • Have opportunities to travel all over Asia
  • Meet people and make friends from all around the world

To me as a middle aged dad, that’s a pretty good life bucket list. Jack will be able to check off all those boxes in next 4 years by the time he’s legally old enough to drink in the USA.

Does that sound like a good college experience?

I moved to the US from Taiwan when I was 10 years old. My parents sent me here to get an American education and attend US colleges. I ended up getting a full tuition…
